Killing Cancer Cells Isn’t Enough: What You Need To Know About Healing and Reducing Recurrence Risk
If killing cancer cells were enough to stay cancer-free, cancer would never come back… right?
But we know that’s not the way it goes.
And that’s exactly why, whether you’re in the middle of treatment or already finished, you might find yourself worrying:
“Am I doing everything I can to heal?”
“Is this enough to make sure it doesn’t come back?”
Those nagging fears can haunt you.
They show up before appointments and scans, and in the days of waiting that follow.
They show up in normal, everyday activities also. Like deciding what to eat for dinner, whether it’s OK to have a glass of wine, or if skipping your walk today was a mistake.
Because when you’re not confident that your body is cancer-resistant, every decision feels high stakes.
You’re doing everything you were told to do. And still, you feel unsettled. Afraid.
Whether you’re in treatment and trying to heal as fully as possible, or you’ve finished treatment and are hearing “you’re done now, I’ll see you in 6 months”… something doesn’t feel quite right.
Because killing cancer cells was the plan. But somewhere deep inside, you know that can’t be the whole answer.
Why You Were Taught to Focus on Killing Cancer Cells
If you’ve been focused on eliminating cancer cells, that makes complete sense.
From the very beginning, the message is clear: get rid of the cancer.
Surgery removes it. Chemotherapy targets it. Radiation focuses on it.
The entire medical system is built around destroying or removing cancer cells.
And when you go looking for more answers, you start hearing the same message in different forms… You should starve cancer through diet. Use supplements to kill cancer cells. Protocols, therapies, or drugs designed to do the same thing: kill cancer cells.
The details vary, but the core idea stays consistent: find what kills cancer cells best.
So naturally, that becomes the goal and the thing we focus on.
When that message is everywhere, it shapes how you think, how you decide, and what you look for next.
Treatment Alone May Not Be Enough: Here’s Why
Most cancer treatments are designed to eliminate cancer cells. And they can be very effective at doing so.
But eliminating cancer cells is only part of the solution.
Abnormal cells are formed in your body all the time. It’s a normal part of being human.
When your immune system is healthy and functioning the way it should, it recognizes those cells and removes them before they have a chance to grow.
But when your body loses its ability to do that effectively, that’s when cancer can take hold and grow.
Think of it like the antivirus software on your computer. When it’s working properly, it’s constantly scanning in the background, detecting and removing threats before they can cause damage.
But if that protection is outdated or not working effectively, harmful cells and signals can go undetected.
When that happens, abnormal cells can survive, grow, and eventually develop into cancer. And cancer cells can gain momentum.
And there’s another important thing that’s seldom talked about, and that’s a type of cancer cell called cancer stem cells.
Cancer stem cells act like the “mother cells” of the cancer. They can continuously generate new cancer cells and cause cancer to grow again when the conditions in the body support it.
They’re more likely to survive treatment, can remain in the body at levels too small to be detected on scans, and can stay inactive for a period of time before becoming active again.
So even treatment that results in no evidence of disease (NED) doesn’t necessarily mean that these “mother cells” are eliminated.
If your internal environment hasn’t changed, new cancer cells can still develop because cancer stem cells may still be present and waiting for the right conditions to start multiplying.
And this is where most approaches fall short. They focus only on eliminating cancer cells, and miss one of the most important components of lasting healing: addressing the internal conditions that allowed cancer to grow in the first place.
So What Actually Keeps Cancer From Coming Back?
Think of it like this. If your basement keeps flooding, you can keep mopping up the water. Or you can find the crack in the foundation.
Most approaches are really good at mopping. But they miss the crack.
The better approach is to address what allowed cancer to grow so you make it harder for cancer to thrive.
This means identifying what’s out of balance in your body and addressing it.
Things like how well your immune system is actually detecting abnormal cells, how much inflammation is present in your body, whether you are adequately absorbing nutrients from your food, or whether your blood sugar and insulin levels are creating conditions that promote cancer growth.
This is exactly what I focus on with my clients inside my Cancer Reset Roadmap program.
We look at all of the systems that shape your internal environment, including immune function, inflammation, blood sugar balance, gut health, nutrient absorption, detoxification, hormone balance, sleep, and stress. We identify what’s out of balance, and build a plan to correct it.
When these systems are supported in a targeted way, specific to your body, you are much more likely to heal fully, respond well to treatment, and reduce the risk of cancer coming back.
What Does a Clear Plan for Healing from Cancer Actually Look Like?
Here’s what that actually looks like inside my personalized, 1:1 Cancer Reset Roadmap program:
We start by getting a complete picture of what’s happening inside your body, including your labs, your history, your symptoms, and other metrics such as sleep and nervous system balance measures from tracking devices.
From there, we connect the dots to uncover the underlying imbalances and hidden stressors that contribute to cancer growth and interfere with healing.
Once we have that clarity, we build your Body-Led Plan™, a personalized roadmap based entirely on what your specific body needs to heal and stay cancer-free, in a way that fits your preferences and lifestyle.
Then we turn that plan into simple routines that fit your life so you can follow them easily.
And as your body changes or as treatment progresses, we reassess and make the appropriate changes. This way, your plan evolves with you.
When you have a Body-Led Plan built around what your specific body needs, you can finally stop trying to do everything to cover your bases. You’ll stop worrying that you might be missing something.
Instead, you have a clear, doable plan that supports your body and makes it harder for cancer to grow.
You’ll feel confident and at peace because you know exactly what to do and how each step supports healing and reduces the chances of your cancer returning.
What Begins to Change When You Support Your Body This Way
When you begin supporting your body in this way, you’re no longer just hoping you’re doing the right things. You know you are.
Every meal, every supplement, every choice is made with confidence.
Scans and tests no longer send you into a spiral of dread.
You have more energy, your sleep improves, and your gut feels better. No more bloating, gas, or embarrassing symptoms.
The anxiety lifts, and you feel more hopeful, relaxed.
But more than that…
You start to trust your body.
And that changes how you live your life.
No more standing in the grocery store paralyzed over which foods are safe. You walk confidently and calmly into your scan appointments. At dinner with friends, you’re actually present, not doing mental math about every item on the menu.
You stop feeling like a cancer patient and start feeling like yourself again.
What This Can Look Like in Real Life: Debbie’s Story
One of my clients, Debbie, had Stage 3 breast cancer.
Like a lot of the women I work with, she was doing everything her doctors told her to do. She wanted to know she was doing everything possible to support her healing, not just waiting to see if treatment worked.
But while she was going through treatment, she didn’t want to leave anything on the table.
So that’s when we started working together.
Instead of only focusing on the cancer and treatment, we also looked at what made her vulnerable to cancer in the first place.
What we found were imbalances that were fueling cancer growth and undermining her ability to heal.
She had a hyperpermeable gut (also called leaky gut). This created constant inflammation that made it harder for her immune system to do its job and fight the cancer.
She wasn’t getting enough deep sleep, even though she was sleeping 8 to 9 hours a night. Deep sleep is when the body does most of its repair and healing, so we started working on that right away.
She was also in the early stages of insulin resistance, even though the labs her doctor ran hadn’t flagged it yet. And since elevated insulin makes it easier for cancer cells to grow, we addressed that right away.
Once we identified those root issues, we were able to support and correct them in a targeted way.
And that’s when things began to change.
She started losing weight she had struggled with for years without forcing it. Foods that used to trigger reactions stopped bothering her. And her energy came back in a way she hadn’t felt in years.
At one point she told me, “I feel like I’m living in a completely different body. I feel like I’m 20 again”
And in many ways, she is.
Now, four years later, Debbie remains cancer-free.
Her experience shows what’s possible when you look beyond just eliminating cancer cells and start addressing what allowed them to grow in the first place.
